At Longfellow, we believe that a strong school community is built through shared responsibility and shared joy. When families volunteer—even in small, manageable ways—it helps create a safer, kinder, and more connected campus for all students. Below are meaningful, low-commitment opportunities for parents and caregivers to get involved in supporting SEL, inclusion, and positive school culture.
Help celebrate and educate through schoolwide events and displays.
This volunteer group helps plan and prepare activities for Black History Month, such as morning announcement spotlights, bulletin boards, book lists, classroom resources, and community-building events. This is an excellent short-term project for families who want to support cultural awareness and belonging at Longfellow.

Support student-led bullying prevention and school climate work.
Ally Action is a district program where trained students lead conversations about kindness, inclusion, and standing up to bullying. Volunteers assist with five 1-hour sessions during any of the following windows:
• Jan 8–Feb 3
• Feb 6–Mar 3
• Mar 5–Apr 7
Volunteers help with materials, group discussions, and supporting the facilitator during each session. No experience needed - just a passion for positive school climate.

A creative way to help make the campus feel welcoming and inclusive.
Each quarter, volunteers help design and set up bulletin boards that highlight SEL themes (kindness, empathy, inclusion) and monthly cultural celebrations (Heritage Months, Awareness Months, etc.). Materials and ideas can be provided - creativity welcome but not required. This is a great option for parents who prefer behind-the-scenes, low-time requirement contributions.
If interested in helping with bulleton boards, contact Alison at abc@longfellowcompadres.org
Help keep our students safe and supported during play.
We are looking for cleared volunteers to help supervise recess during December and beyond. Even one 20-minute shift per week makes a meaningful difference. Volunteers help monitor play areas, support positive peer interactions, and ensure students feel safe and included.
Even if you only have an hour or two, there are stime slots available.

If you’re unsure of your volunteer clearance status, please email Carrie (cstratton@sandi.net) for confirmation.
We are looking for 2-3 parents to help train students lead with kindness on the playground.
Peace Patrol trains a small team of 4th and 5th graders to support younger students during lunch and recess by helping solve small conflicts, including peers, and promoting kindness and safety.
Volunteers assist with:
• A short info meeting for interested students
• One training session for selected Peace Patrol leaders
• Light on-site support during the first week of implementation
This is a high-impact, short-term volunteer role that helps build leadership skills and improves playground culture.
