We have pumpkins. The flowers were open pollinated while I was out of town. The teachers have the first two pumpkins with the students right behind.

Unfortunately the large student pumpkin is growing a bit more than ours. You’ll also see that the injured student pumpkin is starting to grow and also has the first flowers of any of the GIANTS.

The Pumpkins are in and doing well. Big thanks to Sr. Flores for getting them started. The 2 towards the backstop are the student plants and the 2 nearest the jungle gym are the teachers. In another week or so they’ll be needing to be sprayed with a variety of things every other day. Mainly Liquid fertilizer, Seaweed and worm and or compost tea. I’ll be putting a schedule together and I’ll pass it around so you can sign up for whatever day you can. Don’t feel obligated but many hands make light work. All very easy. In about 2 more weeks they’ll start taking off and if all is well in a month or so we should start getting some flowers. We’ll be hand pollinating the flowers then selecting the pumpkins we want to grow and removing the others. At this point you’ll all want to make sure you stop by and see the magic. It’s not uncommon to go from a flower to a 10 lb pumpkin in 3-4 days.

Good Morning,

My name is Nevin Kleege and I am a parent at Longfellow.  I have spoken to Sra. Arce about sharing a fun and educational hobby of mine.  I like to grow GIANT pumpkins.  It is quite a competition amongst growers to see who can grow the largest pumpkins each year.  I am willing to do all the work necessary to get the project underway, but I wanted to extend an invitation to anyone who finds this interest and who would like to help out.

I envision a competition between next year's 8th grade students and the teachers(staff) and am hoping to recruit a Team Leader for each group.  I will be building the growing bed this weekend.

Last year's world champion giant pumpkin weighed in at over 1700 pounds. (That's more then some smaller cars!)  I hope to hold our weigh-off in fall, around the end of October.
