The good news is that at the Tuesday night, Feb. 9, SDUSD Board meeting, there was no discussion on cuts to magnet school funding or transportation. Most of the talk revolved around OCILE and the GATE department. But, now for the bad news, there is no way with the expected budget from Governor Schwarzenegger that the School District can fund its priorities. They will be looking to cut over $60 million to balance the 2010/11 school year budget.
They are in the midst of negotiations with the Unions, hoping for some concessions. But they will have to go into the budget line-by-line to find enough funds to save/cut. The budget will be taken to vote on March 9.
Many parents and students attended to show support for music and GATE. One student, a 5th grader from Vista Grande, asked to protect busing among many other things such as libraries and nurses.
The meeting lasted so late into the night that they took a recess until next Tuesday, February 16, 9:00 a.m. It is again important to attend the meeting so that the Board knows the parents are listening and paying attention. Please attend the meeting on Tuesday, even if its just for an hour. Our presence puts the pressure on the Board to keep the cuts away from our students and the classroom.
