School Information - Middle School
"Benefits of Longfellow!"
Last Wednesday, January 25th, the Longfellow administration hosted a meeting, "The Benefits of Longfellow." At the meeting there were panelists made up of teachers, parents, students, and alumni.
Information was shared about Longfellow's middle school, and middle school teachers introduced themselves and shared their course of studies and expectations. Among the many benefits Longfellow middle school has to offer are: two courses per day (History and Spanish Language) taught in college-level Spanish in 6 - 8th grade; i21 classrooms, fun and interactive projects in their technology elective; AP Spanish Courses for college credit which also meet the A-G requirement in district high school; projects in all classes collaborated between all teachers. Also shared was the benefit students receive from having the same teachers for three consecutive years and the advantage that this provides when preparing 8th graders for testing and high school. Parents and potential incoming students attending were able to ask questions with the panel.
The Benefits of Longfellow meeting is still new, yet each year it has continued to grow and provide valuable information that can help families make their placement decision for their soon-to-be middle school students. The Magnet Choice enrollment deadline is February 15th. All students currently attending Longfellow are automatically enrolled in Longfellow's middle school, and will not need to choice in.
Below is a chart shared at the meeting. It shows the Spring 2011 CST Scores (the percentage of students who received Proficient or Advanced scores) for 8th graders at several of the SDUSD middle schools, including Longfellow. It is amazing to see how well Longfellow has done; Longfellow ranked at the top in most categories. Our students and teachers should be extremely proud of their academic achievement.

The Silent Auction Team Needs Your Help!
Every year, Los Compadres de Escuela Longfellow, (Longfellow’s parent/teacher organization), puts on an amazing silent auction.that benefits our students and provides a great time for all. Last year, the silent auction was a huge success and we hope that this year’s event will be just as successful. As this is one of our biggest fundraisers we do need everyone’s help.
This year’s auction theme is “Out of This World” and will be held on March 10, 2012.
Annually the Silent Auction Committee asks community businesses to donate items or services for this event which are then put up as part of our “silent auction”. We need your assistance in asking for these donations. Please think about your circle – maybe your place of employment would donate? Or a neighbor or a friend? Maybe you have a vacation home? What about the places you go to all of the time? Your dentist, hair salon or gym? Small and large businesses are often willing to give to their regular customers. Even if the donated items do not fit into the theme of your classroom basket, the silent auction committee will gladly take these donations and create an auction item around them.
The News - News and Announcements
Hello Longfellow Families,
A competition started last week and ends February 10th involving the future of San Diego survey. To motivate folks to participate, The San Diego Foundation is offering the school with the most completed surveys a $5,000 prize to use for a Garden or Eco Project. Most likely less than 15 schools will enter, so the odds of winning are pretty good.
If you use the link in the flyer below or Click Here, the votes are automatically added to our school's tally. The Survey has four sections/topics, (Work, Enjoy, Live and Learn) Please complete all four section of the survey, ask everyone in your household to complete the survey, and ask co-workers and friends. It does take approximately 20 minutes, but the survey is very thought-provoking and informative. In order for your survey to count for Longfellow, all four issues presented must be completed.
This is a great chance to talk to students and others about the future of the region and vote on the future of San Diego.
The survey may be taken in Spanish or English. After clicking onto the link, click on the next button, once completing a section at the end there will be a prompt to begin the next until all four have been completed.
